How does SPOT work?  

The GPS system provides information about your exact location.

The GPS receiver built into SPOT determines your exact coordinates and sends the data and your message to the SPOT satellite system.

SPOT's commercial satellites transmit your message through dedicated antennas installed around the world.

The satellite antennas and supporting equipment forward your message and coordinates to the appropriate network.

Your message is delivered according to your instructions via text message, email, or an emergency message to a crisis response center.

When SPOT sends an email or text message to one of your contacts or to the GEOS International 9-1-1 crisis response center, your coordinates and a link to your location displayed on Google Maps are always included.

MAIN OPERATING MODES

9-1-1 Emergency

Use this option in the event of a life-threatening emergency or another critical situation. The disaster assistance center will notify the appropriate services depending on your location. Police, roadside assistance, coast guard, your embassy or consulate, or other rescue and search services may be alerted. The additional contact numbers you entered on the SPOT website will also be notified. Even if SPOT cannot acquire a signal from the GPS network, a distress signal without the exact location will still be transmitted to the disaster assistance center. The service has no test mode - if you activate the 9-1-1 function, the disaster assistance center will treat it as a real emergency.

Request Help

Use this option in a non-life-threatening situation to notify your SPOTteam that you need assistance. In a life-threatening emergency, 9-1-1 and "Request Help" can be activated simultaneously. Both the disaster assistance center and your SPOTteam will be notified that you need help. Even if SPOT cannot receive a signal from the GPS network, a distress signal without exact coordinates will be sent to your selected contacts. To activate the "Request Help" mode

Use this function to let your SPOTteam know that you are OK, to inform them of your location, or to save route waypoints.
