The 499 Air Force survival knife is used by various units of the U.S. Army. Each knife is manufactured to U.S. government specifications. It is made from the popular 1095 steel - very tough and easy to sharpen in field conditions. For this reason, the natural leather sheath includes a pocket with a sharpening stone. The zinc phosphate coating on the high-carbon 1095 helps protect against rust. The blade is clip point, with a sharpened upper swedge and a serrated section on the spine. The handle is made of natural leather with a steel pommel and guard.
