A symbol of the power and strength of the proud Maasai people of East Africa is their elegant fighting spear. This legendary implement of the adult Maasai Moran, or warrior, is one of the most distinctive spears in the world, with its long, narrow blade, short wooden shaft, and heavy counterbalancing butt. The spear is the warrior's most prized possession and never leaves his hand except when he lies down with it stuck into the ground beside him. In fact, many Maasai Morans develop such faith in the deadly power of their spear that they refuse to flee from danger as long as it is within reach. This is understandable, as young Maasai Morans are required to kill a lion single-handedly with their spear to prove their worth and courage.

Each spear is carefully cold-forged from high-carbon steel and paired with a sturdy ash wood shaft and a durable counterbalancing butt spike. When fully assembled, it measures almost 2 meters in length and weighs a bone-crushing one and a half kilograms!

Delivered unassembled, the razor-sharp Maasai spear consists of three parts: the first is the blade itself, measuring 56 cm long and 4.6 cm wide, forged with a thick reinforcing rib running down the center almost to the very tip. The second is the brown American ash shaft with a double taper, which fits into double sockets connecting the butt and the blade. The third is the heavy solid steel spike, which is also heat-treated to a hard spring temper, just like the fearsome blade. This butt spike serves a second purpose, as its sharpened point can be used in place of the blade during training, thus preserving the spear's razor-sharp edge. When fully assembled, these three components form a fiercely effective weapon!
