In the 1990s, a specialized branch of American law enforcement approached Spyderco to create a knife for their undercover agents. The issue for these plainclothes officers was that they often found themselves in situations where carrying a firearm was not possible, but carrying a knife was not a problem. Most had no formal training in self-defense tactics or MBC, but in an emergency they could use a blade to defend themselves or escape a life-threatening situation. That is how the Civilian model came to be.

The Civilian features a patented reverse "S" blade designed to be used like a giant claw. The tip is ground to an ultra-thin profile. Because of its clearly specialized functions, it is not intended or designed for general or everyday use. The black G-10 handle is curved in all the right places for ergonomic use and secure retention. Set up for tip-down carry with a custom curved black clip, the knife rides deep and discreetly in the pocket. The Civilian is one of the most specialized knives in Spyderco's lineup. It is available in limited quantities.
