Paul Alexander has become one of Spyderco’s most popular and prolific designers. His first non-locking folding knife, the NAND, introduced us to his “techno-primitive” design style, combining sleek, futuristic lines with classic simplicity. Derived from that model, his COBOL expresses a unique variation of the Ball Joint Non-Locking Mechanism with a more dramatic, Asia-inspired aesthetic. The upward-curving blade is a hybrid between a traditional Japanese tanto pattern and the katana-style tip of the Americanized tanto. Precision-crafted from M390 stainless steel, its ground saber primary bevel transitions seamlessly into a flat grind at the faceted tip. At the opposite end of the blade is an extended “tail” that allows the knife to be opened one-handed like a classic straight razor. The COBOL’s handle features solid titanium scales with integrated spring arms and seated ball bearings. When the knife is open, the ball bearings index into holes in the sides of the blade to keep it in place. Hand pressure on the blade tail and the generous choil at the base of the blade further ensure a safe, stable grip. To complete its fully ambidextrous design, the COBOL includes a reversible deep-carry wire clip that offers a choice of left- or right-side, tip-up carry.
