The Turn Box series is an extremely stable and compact knife sharpening system. It works excellently in the kitchen and stores away quickly in a drawer. The Turn Box knife sharpener series is also ideal for outdoor enthusiasts on the go, as it is lightweight and fits easily into a backpack. It only takes a few strokes to maintain your edge (a few more if your knife is really dull).
Stropping the blade on leather is a time-tested technique that delivers the finest, shaving-sharp edge your knife has had since it left the factory.
The wooden block has two preset knife sharpening angles – 20 degrees and 25 degrees.
- 25 degrees: Used for hunting, camping, all-purpose, and kitchen knives, providing a sharp, durable edge
- 20 degrees: Used for those who want an exceptionally sharp blade. For example, slicers, fillet knives, boning/carving knives, paring knives, and skinning knives. Lower angles produce sharper knives, but require more regular maintenance.
This two-stage sharpening system includes:
- A hardwood box (base) with an internal storage compartment for the rods, 2 diamond rods measuring 12.7 cm and 2 alumina ceramic rods measuring 12.7 cm, and a leather strop.
- 2 medium-grit diamond rods, 400 grit, for exceptionally fast sharpening.
- 2 fine ceramic rods, 1000 grit, for final honing.
- Leather strop and polishing compound to achieve a mirror finish and shaving sharpness.
Instructions for use
HOW TO USE YOUR TURNBOX
The silver diamond rods are for sharpening, and the white ceramic rods are for final honing.
Preparation: Always begin by placing the Turn Box on a stable, flat surface at a comfortable working height.
Single-stage sharpening
- Step 1: Choose the type of rods and the angle at which you want to sharpen (20° or 25°) by inserting the sharpening rods into the corresponding guide holes.
- Step 2: Hold the base firmly with your non-dominant hand. Make sure your fingers are as far away from the rods as possible while maintaining a stable, controlled grip on the base.
- Step 3: With the knife in your dominant hand, place the heel of the blade (the part closest to the handle) about an inch or more below the top of one of the rods.
- Step 4: Keeping the blade straight up and down (perpendicular to the work surface), draw the blade down the rod and toward yourself, moving toward the tip of the knife. The motion is similar to slicing bread.
- Step 5: Repeat this action on the other rod for the other side of the blade.
- Step 6: Continue alternating between the rods until you achieve the desired sharpness.
- Step 7: Finish by stropping the edge on the leather strop with compound to achieve a shaving-sharp, mirror-polished blade.
Two-stage sharpening
- Step 1: Start by placing the rods in the 20º angle holes and follow the sharpening instructions described in the single-stage sharpening section above, but do not strop/finish the edge – make only 10-12 strokes on each rod. This is done to thin the cutting edge.
- Step 2: After thinning the blade edge, move the rods to the 25° angle holes for the second stage of sharpening to finish the blade. Simply follow the same technique used previously. This will create a durable and sharp compound bevel.
- Step 3: Finish by stropping the edge on the leather strop with compound to achieve a shaving-sharp, mirror-polished blade.
Pro tip: For best results, avoid letting the knife tip slip off the rod at the end of the stroke. This can damage the tip and leave it duller than the rest of the blade. Patience and slow strokes are recommended. Be smart, be safe, and stay... One edge ahead of the rest!
WARNING: Knife sharpening is inherently a dangerous activity. When used properly, this sharpener should not injure you, but careless handling of a blade or pointed object can.
