Lansky 4 Rod Ceramic TurnBox Crock Stick knife sharpening system with leather strop.
The TurnBox series is an exceptionally stable and compact knife sharpening system. It is very convenient for the kitchen and disassembles quickly for easy drawer storage. The TurnBox system is also ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, as it is lightweight and fits easily into a backpack. It takes just a few strokes to maintain your edge (a few more if the knife is very dull). Stropping the blade on leather is a time-tested technique. It delivers the finest, shaving-sharp edge your knife has had since it left the factory. The wooden block has two preset sharpening angles – 20 degrees and 25 degrees.
- 25 degrees: Used for hunting, camping, tactical, and kitchen knives. Provides a strong and durable edge.
- 20 degrees: Used by those who want an exceptionally sharp cutting edge. Suitable for fillet, carving, paring, and skinning knives. The smaller angle produces sharper knives, but requires more regular maintenance.
This two-stage sharpening system includes:
- A solid hardwood box (base) with an internal compartment for rod storage, four 5-inch (12.7 cm) aluminum-ceramic rods, and a leather strop.
- 2 brown rods (medium grit, 600 grit) for sharpening.
- 2 white rods (fine grit, 1000 grit) for fine touch-ups.
- Leather strop and polishing compound for achieving a mirror and shaving-sharp finish.
Instructions for use
HOW TO USE YOUR TURNBOX
The brown ceramic rods are for sharpening, and the white rods are for fine touch-ups and maintenance.
Preparation: Always place the box on a stable, level surface at a comfortable working height.
Single-stage sharpening
- Step 1: Choose the type of rods and the angle at which you want to sharpen (20° or 25°). Insert the rods into the appropriate guide holes.
- Step 2: Hold the base firmly with your non-dominant hand. Make sure your fingers are as far away from the rods as possible while still maintaining stable control of the box.
- Step 3: Hold the knife in your dominant hand. Place the heel of the blade (the part closest to the handle) about one centimeter or more below the top end of one rod.
- Step 4: Keeping the blade straight up and down (perpendicular to the work surface), slide it down the rod and toward yourself, moving toward the tip of the knife. The motion is similar to slicing bread.
- Step 5: Repeat the same action on the other rod for the other side of the blade.
- Step 6: Continue alternating between the rods until you achieve the desired sharpness.
- Step 7: Finish by polishing the blade on the leather strop with compound to achieve a shaving-sharp, mirror edge.
Two-stage sharpening
- Step 1: Start by placing the rods in the 20º angle holes. Follow the sharpening instructions from the single-stage method above, but do not strop the blade at the end. Make only 10-12 strokes on each rod. The goal is to thin the cutting edge.
- Step 2: After thinning the edge, move the rods to the 25° holes for the second stage of sharpening (forming the final edge). Use exactly the same technique. This will create a durable and sharp compound bevel.
- Step 3: Finish by polishing the blade on the leather strop with compound for a mirror, shaving-sharp finish.
Pro tip: For best results, avoid letting the tip of the knife slip and "roll" off the rod at the end of the stroke. This can damage the tip and leave it duller than the rest of the blade. Patience and slow movements are recommended. Be sensible, stay safe, and be... An Edge Above the Rest!
WARNING: Sharpening knives is an activity that involves risk. When used properly, this system cannot injure you, but careless handling of a blade or sharp object can result in injury.
