Casstrom knives come shaving sharp, and to help maintain that edge, we created our own range of handmade leather strops. The Paddle Strop has a larger stropping surface and is ideal for a sharpening session at home or in base camp.

What is a strop and why is it useful?
A strop is used to maintain the knife’s sharpness. Strops are easy to use, and if you strop the knife each time after it has been used, the edge stays sharp longer. That means you do not need to sharpen the knife as often with other, more aggressive tools such as diamond sharpeners or stones.

You use the strop by placing the knife edge against the leather and drawing the knife in the direction of the spine (that is, pulling the blade away from the edge). Repeat the procedure about 20 times on each side.
One side has a coarser surface and the other a finer one. On the coarser side, if desired, you can apply stropping paste for a greater polishing effect.
