Spyderco’s award-winning Autonomy literally revolutionized automatic knife design. Developed to meet the demanding needs of U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmers, it features a number of unique engineering improvements, including an oversized opening button, an integral button spring, and a patented spring module that allows easy replacement without disassembling the knife. All of these features complement the knife’s highly evolved design and rust-resistant construction to make it truly irresistible.

The original Autonomy, designed specifically to be carried in a special pouch on rescue swimmer vests, features a high-visibility orange G10 handle, but no button safety or clip. To adapt the knife to the needs of everyday users, Spyderco modified its design to include a button safety and a reversible pocket clip.

Based on overwhelming demand, Spyderco proudly introduces a third version of the Autonomy that walks the line between the first two. Like the original version, it boasts a satin-finished H-1 blade and bright orange handles, but it also includes an opening-button safety and a reversible pocket clip to make it suitable for pocket carry. The button passes through both stainless steel handle liners, stabilizing them and increasing the blade’s lock strength. The button spring is also an integral part of the stainless steel framework, providing increased tension and eliminating any cavities in the handle that could trap water. The knife’s open-backed construction allows it to be cleaned and dried easily, making it an ideal tool for water rescue operations. Winner of the prestigious “Most Innovative American Design” award at the 2012 Blade Show and International Cutlery Fair, the Autonomy features orange G-10 scales, a satin-finished blade and matching hardware, as well as a secondary lock to prevent accidental activation of the opening button.
