What is reverse osmosis:
The membrane filtration process using reverse osmosis (RO) is fundamentally different from thermal desalination for producing fresh water. Pure water is forced through the membrane from the source solution using the energy of the applied pressure. When the membrane is placed between two solutions with different concentrations, a natural process begins in which the concentrations tend to equalize through the movement of water toward the more concentrated solution - osmosis. In this case, however, the exact opposite is desired – the water must move toward the solution with the lower concentration. To achieve this, pressure is applied to reverse the process – reverse osmosis.
The pressure required to prevent osmosis is called osmotic pressure. For seawater under normal conditions, it is about 25 atmospheres. Therefore, in reverse osmosis, seawater is pumped through the membranes at a pressure higher than the osmotic pressure. During this process, the concentration of salts on one side of the membrane increases, which raises the osmotic pressure and reduces the flow of fresh water. To prevent this, new seawater must be pumped continuously through the chamber. The fresh water flow is proportional to the pressure. The maximum pressure is specific to each installation and depends on the properties of the membrane. If the pressure is excessive, the membrane may become clogged or begin to let too many salts pass through.
The membrane retains the ions of various salts, and only water ions and some monovalent ions can pass through its structure. Thanks to the membrane's high separation capability, the resulting filtrate is very pure (free from all organic compounds and microorganisms). The membrane also does not allow the waste products of bacteria and microorganisms to pass through. For this purpose, highly selective membranes are used. The drinking water obtained does not require additional disinfection and is suitable for drinking. Isothermal membrane methods require less energy than thermal methods. Membrane filtration operates continuously, and the membranes do not need replacement for 5-7 years with proper maintenance, which includes chemical cleaning twice a year.
